TweetThe Commonword Ghosts Project
The HLF funded Commonword Ghosts Project aims to capture the so far unrecorded role that the Nile, Reno and PSV clubs in the Moss Side and Hulme areas of Manchester played in the heritage of the Caribbean community. The clubs and the events associated with them were key in bringing together the community in the 1950’s and ‘60’s and were a significant part of the contribution of the Caribbean community to the richness and diversity of modern Manchester.
In addition to gathering anecdotal evidence through interviews with elders the project will also look at the key buildings where newcomers in the 50’s and 60’s gathered (archive material where the buildings have since been demolished). The material gathered will, besides being archived, be used to produce creative interpretations of the heritage by BME writers and artists, including holding workshops to enable a wide range of people to represent the findings through the written word (poetry, fiction etc…).
The project will culminate in a publication based on the stories gathered and a Ghosts website, which will display all the artistic interpretations of the heritage and will include an interactive element, where people can re-create a day in the life of new Caribbean migrants during the 50s and 60s.
